An Overture to Philosophy 

Philosophy:

Philosophy is the study of problems and questions related to one’s existence and the existence of this universe. It deals with all the fundamental and vital aspects of existence, values, reason, mind and language. Philosophy deals with a rational attempt towards answering all such questions.





Origin of Philosophy:

It began in Ancient Greece in seventh century BC. The term “Philosophy” is derived from a Greek work “Philosophia” meaning “love of wisdom”.



Father of Philosophy:

Socrates (469-399BC) was a Greek philosopher and is considered to be the father and one of the founders of western Philosophy.

Plato was his famous student and he teacher of Aristotle, who further taught Alexander, the Great.



Pillars of Philosophy:

Philosophy basically covers four pillars. They are the following:

  • Theoretical Philosophy (Metaphysics and Epistemology)
  • Practical Philosophy (Ethics, Social and Political Philosophy)
  • Logic (Reason and evidence)
  • History of Philosophy (Historical overview)


Ideas of Philosophy:

Philosophy is having five main ideas. It deals with the knowledge of these five school of thoughts.

  • Epistemology: Deals with theories of Knowledge
  • Ethics: Deals with theories of morality and moral principles 
  • Metaphysics: Theories of existence, identity, cause and effect, time and space.
  • Political Philosophy: Deals with theories of authority, justice and liberty etc
  • Philosophy of Science: Deals with the theories of the foundations and implications of science.
